What DNS filtering is, what it stops, and where it fits.

DNS filtering is one of the simplest security layers you can add to a network. Every time a device opens a website or an app connects to a server, it first looks up a domain name. A DNS filter checks each lookup against lists of known malware, phishing and scam domains, and blocks the bad ones before a connection is made.

Because it works at the network level, it covers every device, including phones, TVs and smart devices that can't run security software. Start with What is DNS filtering? for how it works, what it stops and where its limits are. Then read Protective DNS to see why the NSA and CISA recommend it, and what their guidance says to look for in a service.
